Barricade Situation at Moorpark Apartment Complex Brings Sheriff's Personnel

Armed Suspect Barricaded Inside Apartment

On Tuesday, January 12, 2023, at approximately 1:30 p.m., the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an armed suspect barricaded inside an apartment at the Moorpark Apartments complex located at 2000 Campus Park Drive in Moorpark, California.

Deputies arrived on scene and learned that the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Michael John Smith, was armed with a handgun and had barricaded himself inside his apartment.

Negotiations Fail, Deputies Enter Apartment

Deputies attempted to negotiate with Smith for several hours, but he refused to surrender. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Detail was called in to assist with the negotiations.

After several hours of unsuccessful negotiations, deputies entered the apartment and took Smith into custody without incident.

No Injuries Reported

No injuries were reported during the incident. Smith was booked into the Ventura County Jail on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and resisting arrest.
