Auburn Hires Hugh Freeze as Head Football Coach
Upsides and Risks of the Move
Auburn University has announced the hiring of Hugh Freeze as its next head football coach. The move comes with both potential upside on the field and the risk of embarrassment off it.
A Proven Winner
Freeze has a successful track record as a coach, having led Ole Miss to a Sugar Bowl victory in 2015 and a Peach Bowl win in 2017. He has also been named Region 8-AA Coach of the Year five times and Associated Press High School Coach of the Year four times.
Controversy and Embarrassment
However, Freeze's tenure at Ole Miss was also marked by controversy. In 2017, he was suspended and ultimately resigned after an investigation into his personal conduct. The NCAA later placed Ole Miss on probation for violations that occurred during Freeze's time as head coach.
Auburn's Risk
By hiring Freeze, Auburn is taking a calculated risk. The university is hoping that he can bring success to the football program on the field. However, it is also aware of the potential for off-field issues to resurface.
Only time will tell whether Auburn's gamble on Hugh Freeze will pay off.
